Per analogia: Lens Turbo (I)

Dotarł do mnie zakupiony niedawno adapter Lens Turbo, czyli konkurencja dla zdobywającego coraz większą popularność adaptera Metabones SpeedBooster. Niektórzy zapewne zapytają: a co to takiego?
W największym skrócie jest to zaawansowana odwrotność telekonwertera - po podpięciu obiektywu pełnoklatkowego poprzez ten adapter do aparatu z matrycą APS-C otrzymujemy (mniej więcej) taki kąt widzenia, jaki dawałby ten obiektyw podpięty do aparatu z matrycą FF. Dodatkowo producenci twierdzą, że następuje poprawa jakości obrazu (szczególnie w centrum) oraz - uwaga, uwaga! - zwiększa się światłosiła obiektywu. Brzmi jak magia, prawda? Na szczęście jest proste wytłumaczenie fizyczne - zastosowanie odwrotności telekonwertera pozwala skierować całość światła zbieranego przez obiektyw na matrycę, a nie tylko jego część z centrum obiektywu, jak to ma miejsce przy tradycyjnych, prostych adapterach.

Przejdźmy zatem do pierwszych wrażeń z używania adaptera Lens Turbo (wersja NEX-Canon FD).
W zestawie od tego sprzedawcy z eBaya dostajemy adapter i dwa dekielki, nic więcej. Sam adapter jest bardzo dobrze wykonany i trzymany w ręku przyjemnie ciąży. Jest dobrze dopasowany zarówno do bagnetu NEX-a, jak i obiektywu - nic nie lata, nie kiwa się, całość trzyma się mocno i bez luzów. Niestety, z jedynym posiadanym w domu obiektywem FD, czyli Canon FL 58 mm f/1.2 adapter nie umożliwia ostrzenia na nieskończoność...

Finally a recently purchased Lens Turbo adapter came, a competitor to a more and more popular Metabones SpeedBooster adapter. Some of you will probably ask: what the hell is it?
In a nutshell, this is the inverse of an advanced teleconverter - when you attach a full-frame lens through the adapter to an APS-C camera you should get (roughly) the angle of view of this lens mounted to a FF camera. In addition, the manufacturers claim that the image quality is improved (especially in the center of the frame), and - attention all readers! - that it increases the speed of the lens attached. Sounds like magic, doesnt't it? Well, there is a simple physical explanation - using the inverse teleconverter directs all of the light collected by the lens onto a sensor, not just a part of it from the center of the lens, as it is the case with regular, simple adapters.

Let's get to the first impressions from using the Lens Turbo adapter (a NEX-Canon FD version).
When you buy the adapter from this eBay seller you get it with two caps only, nothing more. The adapter itself is very well made and feels nicely heavy in hand. It is well fit to both the NEX and lens bayonets - nothing moves nor wobbles, everything fits well and tighty. Unfortunately, with the only FD lens I have at home, the Canon FL 58 mm f/1.2, the adapter doesn't allow focusing to infinity...

Jeśli chodzi o działanie adaptera, to faktycznie "redukuje" ogniskową, choć wydaje mi się, że nie o czynnik 0,71x. Obiektyw o ogniskowej 58 mm powinien dać pole widzenia dla ok. 62 mm, tymczasem jest mu bliżej do 66-68 mm. Również zwiększenie światłosiły o 1 EV wydaje się być przesadzone - poniższe zdjęcia były robione przy jednakowym czasie otwarcia migawki i jednakowej przysłonie, pomiar światła centralnie ważony (CW) oraz AutoISO. W przypadku zwykłego adaptera aparat dobrał wartość ISO1000, dla adaptera Lens Turbo - ISO640, czyli mniej więcej 0,7EV. Obrazek nie wydaje się również być ostrzejszym. Ale proszę pamiętać, że to nie był zbyt sprawiedliwy test - taki mam zamiar przeprowadzić jutro.

As far as the performance of the adapter is concerned, it's actually "reduces" the focal length of the lens, although it seems to me that not by a 0.71x factor. A 58 mm lens should give the field of view of about 62 mm, while it is closer to 66-68 mm. Moreover, the expected speed increase of 1EV seems to be exaggerated - the pictures belo were taken with identical shutter speed and the same aperture value, center-weighted metering (CW) and AutoISO. With a regular adapter the camera chose the value of ISO1000, with the Lens Turbo adapter - ISO640, which stands for about 0.7 EV. The picture doesn't seem to be sharper, neither. But please remember, this "test" was far from fair and I'm going to conduct a second, proper one tomorrow.
