When looking for an "ultimate manual telephoto lens" for our mirrorless camera, sooner or later we will end-up thinking about a 200mm focal lenght. The fast (f/2.8 or faster) lenses are very tempting but with their huge size and weight they don't fit the usually small and lightweight EVIL-s. For something lighter and smaller the obious choice would be a 200mm f/4 lens. In this comparison you will find 2 of them, both with the poular FD mount.
Obiektywy z oznaczeniem "S.S.C." są generalnie uważane za lepsze od tych, o których mówimy "FDn" albo "nowe FD". Cóż, ja sam nie do końca zgadzam się z tą opinią, dlatego postanowiłem porównać te wersje i przekonać się, jak to jest naprawdę. Oczywiście taki test należy traktować z lekkim przymrużeniem oka, bo ani nie mam warunków, by profesjonalnie zmierzyć niektóre wartości, ani też próba (po 1 egzemplarzu) nie jest wystarczająco duża, by wyciągać daleko idące wnioski. Oba obiektywy spradzane były z aparatem Sony A7.
The "S.S.C." marked lenses are commonly considered to be better than the ones we call "FDn" or "FD new". Well, to be honest, I cannot entirely agree with that opinion, so I decided to compare these versions to find out the trutht. Please do not treat this test too seriously, I don't have the means to professionally check these lenses and what's more, the statistical sample is way too small to draw the ultimate conclusions. Both lenses were tested with a Sony A7 camera.

Z samej specyfikacji wynika kilka przewag nowej wersji: rozmiary i waga, minimalna odległość ostrzenia, rozmiar filtra, maksymalna przysłona f/32 i niezmienianie rozmiaru przy ostrzeniu. Sprawdziłem więc na szybko, czy wraz ze zmniejszeniem rozmiaru i wagi nie spadła znacząco jakość obrazka.
Looking at the specs we can easily find some advantages of the newer version: the size and weight, MFD, filter size, max aperture f/32 and fixed size while zooming. So I performed a quick test to find out if making the lens smaller and lighter didn't hurt the image quality too much.
Ostrość || Sharpness

Wygląda na to, że wersja S.S.C. jest troszkę ostrzejsza w centrum, rogi są bardzo wyrównane (i naprawdę przyzwoite w obu wersjach).
It looks like the S.S.C. is a tiny bit sharper in the centre, while the corners look very alike (and are really decent in both versions).
Aberracja chromatyczna || Chromatic aberration
Na przykładowych zdjęciach w porównaniu ostrości można dostrzec niewielką aberrację chromatyczną na ostrzejszych krawędziach - warunki nie sprzyjały wydobyciu tej wady, ale wygląda na to, że jej poziom jest porównywalny w obu obiektywach.
Looking at the samples in the sharpness comparison we can find a bit of the CA on the sharp edges - the conditions did not help to bring it out clearly but it looks like the CA level is comparable between the versions.
Winietowanie || Light fall-off
Na "pełnej dziurze" nieco bardziej winietuje wersja "new", wraz z przymykaniem różnice się zacierają.
The vignette is stronger on the pictures taken with the new version of the lens used wide open but the difference gets smaller while stopping down.

Dystorsja była praktycznie niewidoczna na normalnych zdjęciach. Nie badałem pracy pod światło (oba obiektywy mają wbudowaną osłonę przeciwsłoneczną).
Distortion was virtually non-existant on the real-life photos. I didn't test the flare control (both lenses are equipped with a built-in sun hood).
Podsumowanie || Conclusion
Zatem którą wersję wybrać? FD new kusi kilkoma przewagami techniczno-ergonomicznymi, z kolei FD S.S.C. jest ciut ostrzejszy i wpuszcza więcej światła...
Ja wybrałem wersję FDn, głównie ze względu na wagę, rozmiar i mniejszą minimalną odległość ostrzenia. Ale za Was nie zdecyduję, mam jedynie nadzieję, że choćby trochę pomogłem w wyborze.
So which one to choose? The newer version has some technological and ergonomical advantages while the S.S.C. version is a bit sharper and lets more light in... I decided on the FD new one because of the smaller size and weight and ability to focus at closer distances. But I cannot decide for you, I just hope I will make it a little bit easier.
